An Immersion in Beauty

Yoga + Nature + Art + Culture

MAY 3 - 9, 2020 - Cuenca, Spain

Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a town like no other. To be there is to be immersed in beauty: from the world class art museums, the architecture that fits perfectly into the natural landscape, the Jucar and Huécar river gorges, the poetic graffiti, I could go on and on…

Join me for a personal exploration of what happens when we are immersed in beauty. You’ll spend your day moving between yoga, meditation, art museums and exhibitions, gorgeous landscapes and hiking trails, cathedrals, 8th - 18th century architecture, nourishing food, and beautiful company. Some questions you might explore; What inspires me? What role does beauty play in my life? What effect does beauty have on my stress level? What feels possible when I pay attention to what is beautiful and engage with it? How might beauty play a role in my own self-care moving forward? This retreat is an opportunity to explore these questions and more by stepping away from our daily responsibilities, and finding profound relaxation and inspiration. In order to ensure an intimate experience, I am limiting this retreat to 12 participants so register soon!

Cuenca has been my home since July 2018. Since I arrived, I’ve been dreaming up a way to hold a retreat here and it has finally come to fruition. My family chose Cuenca for its beauty - it’s access to nature, hiking, and climbing, and it’s stunning old city full of history dating back to the 8th century. What I love most is the harmony between this small old city and the natural landscape surrounding it. Cuenca is perched atop cliffs formed by its two rivers the Jucar and the Huécar and as I look at the city from afar, it feels like the structures built on top of and into the rocks actually belong there. Not a day goes by when I’m not blown away by how beautiful my home is. I can’t tell you how excited I am to share this place with you.

Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO sites can be both cultural and/or natural places, and are considered to be of ‘Outstanding Universal Value’, and thought to have “special importance for everyone and represent unique, or the most significant, examples of the world’s cultural and/or natural heritage”. Cuenca is both a cultural and natural heritage site. The 1996 designation protects both the historic buildings in the old city as well as the natural landscapes surrounding them.

Yoga and our Shala

Our yoga shala is in the historical, family home of one of Cuenca and Spain’s most treasured abstract artists. We’ll be hosted by Pablo and Angeles, who have graciously offered up their incredible space for us to practice in and share meals together. It is full of incredible art pieces and offers expansive views of the Jucar River Gorge. The home itself is yet another example of the blend of old and modern, and natural and human-made forms. It is this harmony that is the essence of Cuenca.

This retreat is open to yoga practitioners of all levels. That means beginners as well as more experienced yogis. I teach to the group that arrives, and offer modifications as needed. Our classes will range from dynamic vinyasa to relaxing restorative, integrating asana, guided meditation, pranayama (breath work) and reflection. I typically have participants of all ages and backgrounds. I‘m prepared with a plan but the group that arrives dictates the program. I have something for everyone. In order to ensure an intimate experience, I am limiting this retreat to 12 participants so register soon!

My intention in creating this retreat is to offer an experience in which we interact with both interior and exterior landscapes. Interior, through our yoga and contemplative practices and exterior through both the natural and cultural world of Cuenca, Spain. Cuenca was founded in the 8th century and has been home to Muslims, Jews, and Christians. It is a hub for abstract art creating an incredible melding of ancient structures and modern art. Every aspect of this retreat will be an immersion in beauty. Your tuition includes daily activities that will inspire you and instill a sense of wonder. Explorations include:

  1. Guided hikes through the Jucar and Huécar River Gorges.

  2. Walking tour of the old city

  3. Visit to Cuenca’s 12th century Cathedral

  4. Visit to Cuenca’s world class abstract art museums and famous “Casas Colgadas”

  5. Visit to the Parador de Cuenca
